Knowing what to do as a writer in a historical moment punctuated by a rise of AI in publishing is important to achieving your goals.
You’re facing the biggest technological revolution that will change a) the definition of what a writer is, b) threatening to change business models.
However, the AI hype tends to be more postulation than factual analysis.
There are many apocalyptic scenarios being bandied about as inevitable. A lot of which are just opinions without data to prove that opinions are indeed matching the trends in the real world.
So how do we get to the truth?
Over the next six months, I’ll be embarking of a great adventure- exploring the best case use of AI in the fiction publishing process. As a writer, I ‘m curious about the potential of using artificial intelligence in the creative process. I stand behind my assertions that AI will never truly overtake human genius and creativity. However, this doesn’t mean that I don’t believe that it has uses.
What Are We Going To Be Doing?
There are a lot of questions that need answers, for example :
- Can AI really write a novel?
- What does an AI written novel read like?
- What does it take to write a good AI novel?
- Will it be easier to market an I written novel?
I’ll be conducting this experiment using ChatGPT and Gemini AI tools. I will share my progress, insights, successes, and failures with you, so put your helmets on and share this journey with me.
My goal is to discover what’s possible with AI. It’s time to separate the wheat from the chaff. It’s easy to make claims, however, truth can only be arrived at by testing the claims.
Is six months enough time to validate information? I will iterate as the demands of the case study necessitate.

At the same time there have been various opinions from different people in different industries who have sounded the death knell for the creative fields.
However, the knell has been sounded for other professions as well. These assertions are made without proof. The outlook is currently driven by conjecture instead of rigorous study of long-term trends.
The massive layoffs that have hit many companies are said to be the effects of AI adoption. The global economic climate isn’t factored into the reasons why companies are carrying out mass layoffs.
Another aspect that will be explored in the case study is will the AI take over instantaneous or protacted?
What does this mean for media and publishing business models?
Will writers be the losers or does AI provide them with the tools to effectively counter the gatekeeping culture that manybwriters see as the reason they havent blown up yet?
How will the established publishing powerhouses be affected? Does AI threaten their business model?
How Will We Do The Case Study?
I will utilise a number of methods to try and be as thorough as possible. This will include:
- Creating fiction and non fiction ebooks and publishing them on Amazon. I will be using a pen name for these books.
- I will also start a business focused blog to see how they perform and explore possibble monetization models such as affiliate marketing, sponsorships etc.
When Can You Expect The Results
As you can see this is a long term case study.
However, I will give regular updates as I go along. I haven’t fixed a timeline yet, I’m still weighing the option between monthly and quarterly reports.
Also, you ou can expect the scope of the case study to change because the AI ‘revolution’ is still in the transitory phase and no one knows where it will end up
